I spent 20 happy, crazy, stressful, hilarious, miserable, exhausting, exhilarating, creative and sweary years in the marketing departments of four major multi award-winning publishing companies within both Penguin Random House and Hachette UK, where I learned my craft from the bottom up.
I've chaired meetings, managed 7-figure budgets, built endless cardboard display bins, cried in the toilets, won awards, got drunk at lunchtime, worked till 11pm every night for months and clocked countless bestsellers and helped sell literally millions of books. And there was that one time I had to charter a private jet across the U.S to get the author to his meeting with Ridley Scott. (Hi Justin Cronin👋🏼)
I have created bestselling campaigns for household name authors like John Grisham, Stephen King, Michael McIntyre and Stephen Fry.
I (deep breath)…
Worked on commercial fiction, science fiction, crime fiction, literary fiction, business, personal development, history, politics, science, biography, memoirs, reference, cookery, humour, children’s books, self help, lifestyle and sport.
Created advertising and marketing campaigns that appeared on TV, radio, cinema screens, billboards, nationwide poster sites, the London underground, in newspapers, magazines, on websites, mobiles, search engines, social media platforms, flyposted on the street and projected onto the side of buildings.
Taught a Guardian Masterclass on social media, and subsequently taught courses on How to Get a Job in Publishing in both London and Manchester with The bks Agency, run events, taught lectures, delivered webinars, directed conferences, run exhibition stands, planned bookshop tours, hosted parties and actual piss-ups in actual breweries.
Launched debut authors, created bestsellers, crafted and run publicity campaigns, won countless pitches, built websites, filmed hundreds of authors, wrote hundreds and hundreds of thousands of words of copy.
Trained for my CIM diploma, coaching qualifications and a boxing match (for real. I went to my interview at Penguin Books with a black eye. Reader, I got the job).
And then… I left.
I never thought for a single hot minute that I’d become an entrepreneur (if you want to know how & why it actually happened then this and this podcast interview will give you the lowdown), but over time I realised that I have the skills and experience to help people do things differently and create huge successes in their personal and business lives.
So what have I done since I left the 9–5?
Well, I launched a business. And then I launched a second one; starting a literary agency with two friends – The bks Agency. I launched a podcast (it won an award, which was nice). I qualified as an NLP practitioner and then certified as a Life Coach and then a Master Coach, because I’m obsessed with how our brains work and nothing is more fun that gently poking holes in the nonsense they like to serve up to us as facts. Somewhere along the way, I found out that I had ADHD (which let me tell you, explains, well, everything).
I would say that things have come full circle, but I think that implies that there was some method to the erratic madness. When, in fact, it’s only the benefit of hindsight that allows us to see how the dots have joined up. And I’m looking forward to seeing where those dots take me next, eager as any reader to turn the page on a new chapter …
