How to write a book that actually sells...

You might be forgiven for thinking that there are just two main things you need to do to write a book that sells:

  1. Write it
  2. Make it good

And whilst, yes, those are pretty important parts of the equation there is a little more elbow grease that needs to be applied to the situation. But the good news is, if you do the detective work, you will be rewarded with ... THE KNOWLEDGE.

Regular viewers will know that I make no bones about the fact that writing a (good) book and getting it published is *hard work*. Not that it's not fun, rewarding, creatively stimulating, potentially lucrative etc etc but it can also be frustrating, expensive, lonely, terrifying and painful. Just kidding! Well, not really. It's not all hearts and flowers all the time. But that's why I'm here to help you navigate the tricky bits and celebrate and enjoy the good bits.

So what *do* you need to do to write a book that sells? Well to get yourself in the strongest possible position for success, you need to do your RESEARCH. It doesn't matter what you're writing, you're not doing it in a vacuum and the more you know about the landscape in which you are writing, the greater your competitive advantage will be.

This week's video is taken from a Facebook Live Book Clinic that I did, all about the different kinds of research that you should be doing to help you write and publish, not just a good book, but the best book IN YOUR MARKET. Because those are the books that people actually buy, or get actual agents, or publishing deals.

A not-exhaustive list of some of the things I cover:

  • Tough love & hard work
  • What else is selling in the market (and what isn't)
  • Why you should read your competitor's books (and why you shouldn't)
  • Why do people rave about your competitor's books (and why you should care when they don't)
  • Why you need to learn to stalk people on twitter (in a non-creepy way please)
  • Why you need to care about what font your title is in...

If you follow my suggestions and build up a picture of where your book sits within the market you will be coming from a position of unassailable strength in both the planning, writing and publishing of your book. You will be armed with knowledge that simply most people don't bother to find out and this, my friend, will make you a total Book Boss.
